Sunday Sep 12, 2021
Speaker: Matthew Walker
Series: Jonah Series
Scripture: Jonah 3:1 - 4:3
There are two levels of obedience. There is the outward obedience that conforms to some external pressure. This obedience looks right because it is visible. But real obedience is the kind of obedience that comes from the heart. This heart obedience is what God desires; that we would obey Him because we want to obey, not just because we feel like we must obey. Jonah obeyed God, but not because he wanted to. He did not have this type of heart obedience.

Series: How to Study the Bible Effectively
God wants us to understand Him because faith comes by hearing. However, if one cannot hear, how can he have faith? If we cannot understand what we are reading in God’s word, there is no way we can learn to obey and follow Him. Learning to study the Bible effectively means learning how to comprehend God’s word. Sunday Aug 29, 2021
The psalmist asked the penetrating question: “Can I find a place where God is not already there?” He knew that he might attempt to run from God, but God would easily find him. Jonah thought he had outwitted God by having himself cast overboard, but God will not let someone die if he wants him to live. He is sovereign that way. Jonah discovered the truth that the fish is not a curse, but a blessing.

King Hezekiah is one of the most fascinating characters in the Old Testament. He was one of the most faithful kings of Judah, yet his pride lead to the downfall of his nation. In that sense, he was a lot like us. He was a mixed bag of faithfulness and sin. He is both an example to follow and an example to avoid. Tonight’s sermon: Hezekiah’s Legacy (2 Kings 20:20-21).

One of the aspects of worldliness that the apostle John called us to avoid is the pride of life. It is a dangerous sin because it can infect us regardless of our financial or social status. Some of the poorest Christians can struggle with the pride of life. Hezekiah, after recovering from his sickness, was enriched by God through gifts from other kings and kingdoms. But he let the accumulation of wealth go to his head. His attitude toward his possessions resulted in judgment from God. Tonight’s sermon: Beware the Pride of Life. (2 Kings 20:12-19)

Some Christians talk a lot about victory. However, Christians who know themselves well understand that victory is a goal, but defeat is more common. More of the Christian life is learning to overcome spiritual defeat than in dealing with pride in spiritual victories. What a blessing to read that the disciples, just like us, were prone to spiritual defeat and that Jesus did not abandon them just because they abandoned Him.

If the Christian life is so hard, why would anyone actually want to be a Christian? Is it only because of the promise to avoid hell and enjoy eternity with God? Actually, God blesses the godly here on earth. We might be tempted to overlook the blessings and even become ungrateful for them, but they are there. In tonight’s sermon we find the encouraging story of Hezekiah’s answer to a personal prayer request. In this story we see the blessings of God on His followers. Tonight’s sermon: Miraculous Blessings for a Godly Man. (2 Kings 20:1-11)
