When I was in the Marines, I went through a yearly fitness report. My platoon sergeant would sit down with me and go through an evaluation he made of my service the previous year. Then he would show me my score. Of course, God does not sit us down as a church and go over a checksheet to see how we are doing as a church. But there are places in Scripture where we can work through the text and self-evaluate to see how we are doing. Today’s sermon: Our Fitness Report. (Mark 6:6b-12)

The author of 1 Kings writes, sadly, that Solomon gave his heart to his wives. He loved them so much that he stopped loving the Lord with his whole heart. This allowed those pagan women to turn his heart away from God to idols. Tonight, we dig into the reason why Solomon was willing to give up his heart to these women.

How do we know what we know? Philosophers call this epistemology. I believe in the existence of Indonesia, though I have not been there and do not know anyone from there. How do I know it exists? These types of questions plague Christianity. Unbelievers ask: “How do you know the Bible is God’s word?” “How do you know Jesus was the Son of God?” These kinds of questions not only challenge our faith, they force us to reaffirm the most important things about it.
